A Mission of Mercy to Haiti before and after the Earthquake

As reported in the January, 2010 Collinwood Observer the Aspinwall Church of God Mountain Assembly provided ”Christmas in October - 2009” for their churches, 13 schools, and 3 children’s homes in Haiti. The church sent a 40 foot container to Duval Riche which is 10 miles away from Port au Prince. It was filled with 36,000 pounds of food, medicine, clothing, household articles, toys, and a large tent with chairs to be used for revivals.

On January 12, 2010, the island was devastated by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake! The container miraculously survived the destruction of the surrounding church, and school. Both the container and the revival tent have now become a shelters and homes for the pastor and the children residing in the school.

Henry Longfellow and Collinwood High school have been involved in a project called vertical teaming. Vertical teaming is when a high school partners up with our elementary school and staffs from each building work together on various projects. One such project has been “My Buddy Reading Program”.  Each week members of the Collinwood ROTC come to Henry Longfellow and read to students in Pre-K thru the 2nd grade. This program benefits each building. Students from the Collinwood ROTC earn service hour credits and Longfellow Students develop a relationship with the high school students. Our upper grades at Longfellow are involved with the English classes at Collinwood in a pen-pal program. This program benefits writing communication skills between the schools. The writing provides insight to the activities offered at both buildings.

Young authors getting the job done

Imani, Gregory and Mariah had an educational adventure writing about their amazing characters. They encountered many animals in the Big Books of our reading series. They found many fascinating facts in the Big Books and were eager to write about the animals after the stories. They became the illustrators for our class book. It was fun drawing and coloring the pictures for each story. Mariah’s favorite story is "Clyde the chameleon". Gregory liked "The Hibernating Bear" best. Imani enjoyed the story about "Farfollina the Caterpillar."  We are enjoying our student treasures.

When many outsiders think of Collinwood they think of it as the setting for the 2002 movie Welcome to Collinwood, starring George Clooney. One resident sees it differently. Dustin Nowlin, a resident of the area since the age of 15, thinks the area is a breeding ground for young artists. He enjoys walking through the neighborhood with his dog Cabbie.

“Collinwood is ripe for new blood,” Nowlin said. “There needs to be more young artists.”

Nowlin, along with two other artists, plan to show off some of their talent with an exhibition called A War Within Our Hearts opening March 12, 2010 at the Doubting Thomas gallery on 856 Jefferson Ave in Tremont. During the opening night, 6-10 PM, there will be merchandise, as well as food and refreshments, available.

Ten Candles on the Cake: The Beachland celebrates a decade with much anticipated guests

Hundreds celebrated the Beachland Ballroom’s tenth anniversary, this past weekend, with Pere Ubu and Roky Erickson. Here are the highlights:

Pere Ubu: The God Daddies of Avant Garage
David Thomas  took the stage dressed as neutral as his attitude and wore a coat as long as his moustached face. The term avant-garage was actually coined by the frontman himself (not to be confused with the deceased Wendy's Restaurants entrepreneur) so that journalists could pigeon-hole their sound. Pere Ubu is also often described as post punk, experimental, and proto new wave. In 1974 Mr. Thomas was the vocalist of a group called "Rocket From the Tombs."  In  1975, Thomas left Rocket From the Tombs with guitarist Peter Laughner to form Pere Ubu which left Johnny Blitz and Cheetah Chrome to join Stiv Bators, forming the infamous punk outfit the Dead Boys. Hailing from right here in our rust belt city, Pere Ubu birthed their first creative child, "The Modern Dance" in 1978 and performed every molecule of it on the Ballroom stage over 30 years later for a special Anniversary show on March 5th. This night in Cleveland, you looked around and forgot THIS many people lived in the city limits. There was no generation gap, which really gives you a strong idea of how influential this band really was and still is.

Salvation Army Day Camp

Today it is 22 degrees, Fahrenheit. With the wind chill factor, it is about 13 degrees and snowing. It’s February 25, 2010; it’s doing what’s expected. Thus far this winter, it has snowed a total of 59.1 inches…a better than normal winter for this region. However, with approximately 1 ½ months to go of snowy and or cold weather…it’s a wonder that a superhero hasn’t flown to the North Pole to turn off the snow machine…

It’s cold and snowy days like these that we begin to think more about warm weather and summer: summer vacation, summer school, summer camp. You know how fast time flies…before we know it, it will be summer.  Summer, yeahhhhh! The beach, boating, swimming, no coats, no boots, no snow!  Just fun in the sun!

TO DO THIS WEEKEND Saturday, March 13

Arts Collinwood Gallery: Closing party for “A Little R&R” (George Roby’s ceramic sculptures, GR Hamilton’s dioramas), 6 - 9pm. Singer-songwriter John McGrail (“a hell of a guitar player” whose songs express the discontents of our times) will play at 7:30 pm.

Low Life Gallery: Opening Reception for “Junkmail and Advertisements: Paintings by Joshua Rex”, 6-10 pm; Trouble Books perform at 7:30 pm for their Record Release Party. Joshua Rex is appalled by the deluge of advertising flowing from and over “neon chain stores and ravaged cities”; he paints the products they lure us to buy. “Junk is a mood as well as a physical reality.” The show runs till March 28.

New Craft Shop Grand Open: Ever since Waterloo Design closed (quite some years ago), I’ve been agitating for a handicrafts shop – a source of handmade soaps, cushions, wooden objects, pottery (and, in Waterloo Design’s case, felt pierogis. Perfumed felt pierogis.) I’m not sure about the felt pierogis, but Salty Not Sweet, which opened last week next to Arts Collinwood on Waterloo, promises to fill the gap on giftable items in general. And it’s working on a letterpress studio.

It's sweeter than most I've tasted, owing to the iberal sprinkling of butter and sugar on the top. It's the one time of year I have occasion to buy buttermilk, although the lady in front of me in line at Dave's was delighted to see I'd found the buttermilk (in fact, I'd had to request it from the dairy manager, who graciously brought some out from the back cooler) as she was shopping for her mom and was going to have to make another stop otherwise. Apparently it's good over cornbread. Can you make it with dark raisins? With less sugar or more? With ground nuts? You may, and you'll be on your way to developing your own family's tradition of soda bread. . .
