Mass to Celebrate Shared Scouting Heritage

Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of all ages, past and present, are invited to Saint Casimir Parish on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at 12 noon for a special All Scout Mass. Uniformed scouts from local parishes will serve as readers and ministers, and attendees are invited to wear their Scout uniforms or the insignia from their time in Scouting.

The mass will celebrate the shared heritage of Scouting and mark the birthday of the founder of The Boy Scouts Association and Girl Guides, Lord Robert Baden-Powell. His success inspired his friend Juliet Gordon Low to return to her native Savannah, Georgia in 1912 and start the very first troop of Girl Scouts of the USA.

Since 1926, Scouts celebrate Baden-Powell’s birthdate, February 22—which he shared with his wife, Olave—as World Thinking Day. Scout families in more than 145 countries around the globe celebrate over 110 years of Scouting supporting the physical, mental and spiritual development of young people, so that they may play constructive roles in society. Olave wrote that, though we cannot visit with our brother and sister scouts around the globe, “you can reach out to them there in your mind. And in this unseen, spiritual way you can give them your uplifting sympathy and friendship.”

The celebration will be a full Catholic Mass, but all are welcome at St. Casimir.

Martin Luther King Day Celebration at The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army will host a Martin Luther King Day celebration on Monday, January 16th from 10:00 until 2:00.  Children and teens of all ages are invited to take part in this event. This year’s theme is DREAM, MOVE, SERVE.  We will begin with a brief talk and question and answer session from a woman who will tell us about her experiences in the South during The Civil Rights Era.  Her insights will be as relevant today as it was in the 1950’s and 60’s.

Participants will then be invited to join age appropriate workshops based upon the day’s theme: Dream, Move, Serve.  After the workshops, lunch will be served and the children will have the opportunity to make cards which will be distributed to The Hospice of the Western Reserve located on E. 185th Street.

At the end of the day participants will be invited to share the projects that they created during the workshops.

Event planners include: Caroline Peak, Charlotte Iafeliece, Margaret Craig, Sr. Madeline Muller, Jamar Doyle and Valerie Beutel.   AmeriCorps members from NEOMED and University Hospital will volunteer.

Citizen Circles are Coming to Collinwood

Citizen Circles are groups of community members committed to helping offenders make the transition from “offender to citizen”. They create partnerships that promote positive social interactions and accountability to help offenders become productive citizens.

Offenders and their families develop relationships with community members and jointly develop a plan to help the offender re- integrate into society. An important part of this re- entry process is the communication to them that their debt has been paid and the community is willing to accept them as a restored citizen.

How do Citizen Circles work?
Offenders seek involvement of their own free will.
Circles focus on the future rather than the past.
Circles create an environment aimed at fostering acceptance and for using on the
individual’s personal strengths.

We need your involvement as an ordinary citizen to help make this happen. If you are interested in participating in a circle, please contact Sr. Madeline Muler at mmuller68@gmail.com or 216.408.0214.
