Our August meeting turned out to be very informational!

On Sunday, August 11, the Collinwood Slovenian Home had a party to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The capacity crowd was treated to a delicious traditional Slovenian dinner catered to by Tavcar's. A wide variety of thoughtful and generous donations were available for raffle. Councilman Polensek gave an inspirational speech chronicling the importance of the Slovenian Home to the neigborhood. Entertainment was provided by Patty C and the Boys.

Do you have a project that would make a positive impact in the neighborhood? Collinwood Connects has now extended the deadline for Family Feud Game Night team applications. Apply to play as a team for a chance to win a micro-grant that helps your community project come to life!

Collinwood Connects is accepting applications through September 6, 2019. Teams of five will compete on October 11 and November 15 to win a microgrant of up to $4,000. Awarded micro-grants must be applied to a project that takes place in Greater Collinwood. 

Participants must live and projects must take place in Collinwood, Nottingham Village, Euclid Green and Glenville-East. Applications are due Friday, September 6 at 12pm. Team selections will be made by September 20, 2019.

Collinwood Connects is possible thanks to funding from Cleveland Neighborhood Progress through their Neighborhood Solutions Award.

The True2U Mentoring Program serves all 8th graders in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District once a month on a Thursday morning. Volunteer mentors work in small groups to guide students in accepting and celebrating who they are so that they can be true to themselves now and in the future. True2U is currently looking for mentors who are passionate about developing Cleveland’s future leaders. As a mentor you can give back to Cleveland Metropolitan School District through in-school mentoring, you can connect with other passionate volunteers, and can build upon your interpersonal and professional skills. True2U is looking for community members to mentor in the following Collinwood schools - East Clark, Euclid Park, Hannah Gibbons, Iowa-Maple, Kenneth W. The E 185th Neighborhood Association held its July meeting, as always, at the Lithuanian American Citizens Club on E 185th St. And  - as always - there were lots of upcoming events to catch everyone up on, and our Fifth District Community Engagement Officer was on hand as always, to talk about neighborhood issues, & report back on previous questions.

Given the way the weather's been going this summer, you can imagine our being a tad leery about our annual E 185th Neighborhood Association Potluck Picnic. And right up to the day before, the weather was doing its best to be "iffy".

Want to coordinate a neighborhood cleanup or clean out your home or garage? Greater Collinwood Development Corporation has coordinated 3- Days of FREE DUMPSTER ACCESS for residents to discard trash from their yards, garages, and street. The dumpster will be available from July 12th through July 14th and located on the corner of Canterbury and E. 185th Street. On Saturday, July 13th from 9am- 12pm GCDC will be on site to provide gloves, trash bags, pickers, and brooms to help you with your cleaning needs.

Greater Collinwood Development Corporation has partnered with ICONS to help gather your input! The survey has two parts. The first part of the survey will help us come up with fun questions for our Collinwood Connects Neighborhood Family Feud Game taking place this fall. The second part will help make sure that we understand the neighborhood to the best of our ability and focus our efforts on the issue areas that people care the most about. At the end of the survey, don’t forget to include your name and contact information to be entered in our raffle for an opportunity to win a prize! In 2006, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation, along with former Cleveland Mayor Michael White, established a leadership training program for engaged neighborhood leaders.  The Neighborhood Leadership Development Program is a free, 16 session community engagement training program for residents of Cleveland, and its inner ring suburbs, who are working on projects within the City of Cleveland and who are determined to make a positive impact on their communities.

At Cleveland Water, we work hard to provide safe, quality drinking water at a fair and reasonable rate. We know that’s not always enough though.

Several years have passed since Francis Demaske created this trio of nostalgic theater paintings.  The artist has had a long fascination with the built environment and creating art documenting the urban landscape. He is a formally trained artist, illustrator, graphic designer, and tenured professor teaching at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. His three works displayed here are nostalgic Euclid and Collinwood Theaters. The LaSalle Theater is the only theater which exists in its original design. The Shore Theater was demolished in the early 1980’s, and the Lake was remodeled in the mid 1980’s, the result of a theater expansion.

The inspiration for the theater series was the result of a drive by of the LaSalle Theater. At the time it was showing deterioration and Francis wanted to document the beauty of the landmark in its heyday. The LaSalle painting was followed by paintings of the Lake and Shore theaters. A donation of framed copies was made to the Euclid Historical Society. He is currently producing a contemporary painting of the LaSalle along with one of the Warner Theater in Erie, Pennsylvania. He has achieved the feeling of a late summer evening with warm pale early evening light moving across the theater surfaces, the intricate detailing of signage and neon, the neat geometric shapes made by the contours of the structures as they cut into the summer sky.

There was lots of upcoming events to catch everyone up on, and our Fifth District Community Engagement Officers were on hand as always, to talk about neighborhood issues, & report back on previous questions.

Thanks to hard work, and some very welcome donations, the Collinwood School Fire Memorial Garden is looking alot better.

CASA of Cuyahoga County, a program of Child and Family Advocates of Cuyahoga County, recruits, screens, trains, and supports volunteers who act as independent fact-finders for the court in cases involving child abuse and neglect. 

Shelby, a tan colored shepherd-mix dog, went missing from the parking lot located at 885 E. 222nd St. on April 12. There have been several unconfirmed sightings between Euclid and North Collinwood, but the dog is still at-large. Shelby is a friendly dog, but very scared. If you see her, please contact 440-497-0702 immediately so she can be reunited with her family. There is a $200 reward being offered for the dog's safe return.

In my last eNews update, I told you about changes to come at our newly rebranded Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Centers (NRRCs). I am pleased to announce that registration for the City of Cleveland's expanded summer programming at our NRRCs is now open. All of these programs are free.

Earlier this week, Cleveland City Council passed the legislation necessary for this important step forward. The City’s 22 Neighborhood Resource & Recreation Centers will offer expanded intergenerational programming. Registration for Summer 2019 programs is available by completing a registration form in person at one of the NRRCs or online by clicking here. Some class sizes are limited. Early registration is recommended.

So what do these changes mean for you? My goal is for our NRRCs, in collaboration with my Office of Prevention, Intervention and Opportunity for Youth & Young Adults, to provide better intergenerational programming that expands the scope of opportunity available to our residents - especially our youth and young adults. These enhanced programs strategically transition away from traditionally sports-based offerings to programming aimed at giving youth a stronger foundation for success later in life. 

 Born in 1949, Ronald Sweed was the only child of Robert and Irene Sweed, growing up at 1964 Idlehurst Drive. In 1963 he and some friends would attend a showing of "Dr Silkini and his Frankenstein Show" at a local theater. A combination of live act with skits and showing of old monster movies much in the style of local Ernie Anderson's Ghoulardi Show on WJW TV-8 that Ron enjoyed.  In the alley after the show they found a pitched trunk with a gorilla suit in it. He wound up taking the suit and wearing it home. In July of that year he'd heard Anderson would be attending Euclid Beach Park's Coca-Cola Day to do a promotional appearance. Sweed decided to show up in the gorilla suit where after Anderson having seen him got him up on stage and incorporated him as part of his act. Soon afterwards Anderson took him on as an intern helping with bits and other chores with the show. At age 14, misusing his station's credentials, he was able to meet the Beatles at a press conference held at their downtown hotel prior to their concert at Municipal Stadium. The Ghoulardi Show ran from 1961 to 1966 when Anderson left for Los Angeles finding a lucrative career doing voice over work. The slot and format of the show would continue as Houlihan and Big Chuck, who had worked with Anderson on the show with Sweed continuing on as an intern.

BRIARDALE GREENS GOLF COURSE

The Alzheimer's Association and the Collinwood Recreation Center, 16300 Lakeshore Blvd., are offering two free public education events in May. Both events will be held at the Collinwood Rec Center from 9 a.m to 10 a.m.

Hospice of the Western Reserve welcomed Beach Club Bistro to David Simpson Hospice House for an April Meal to Remember. The program invites Cleveland’s top chefs to participate in providing a meaningful dinner together for patients and their families. All of the food and culinary talent are donated by the restaurant. This marked the 10th dinner owner Greg Jurcisin and the culinary staff at Beach Club Bistro have generously donated, prepared and served since the program’s inception!

One of Euclid's best kept secrets is electronics repairman Ernie Hirsh, age 95, who works most days a week in his shop in the 500 block of East 185th Street, as he has since 1958.   Ernie is attuned to all things tv and recalls that he saw on Channel 8 that the next total eclipse of the sun viewable in North America will occur on April 8, 2024, Ernie's 100th birthday.  So special will this day be, and so robust Ernie feels at present that he is confident he will be able to view that eclipse. 

They say that every dog has its day, and on March 19, it was Linus’s turn to shine. The gentle Golden Retriever therapy dog was honored for a very special milestone: 10 years of bringing comfort, compassion and smiles to patients and their families at David Simpson Hospice House.

For forty years the Linda Mae has been an icon on the shoreline of Wildwood Park with her familiar green and yellow color scheme. Her home port next to the also familiar green and yellow pier at Gate 1 of the Nottingham Water Transfer Station will no longer be. Linda Mae’s new home port will be at Chagrin Marine and with her will be the Popeye and Express boats. The move was necessary as Cleveland Metroparks dissolved their interests in the fishing charter business with Captain Vitas Kijauskas and his fleet. This is only the beginning of Linda Mae’s long and arduous journey east.

At our March 12th meeting, we welcomed Commissioner Rachid Zoghaib and his team, to explain the soon-to-begin E 185th St Water Pollution Control Project.

As luck would have it, Jim contact us to place an ad for masonry work in the Observer. It just so happened that we had been looking for someone to do repair work on our chimney, as the bricks were scaling. We had very little luck in finding anyone to even come out to give us a price for such a small job and if they did come out, they wanted to replace most of the chimney at a huge cost. Jim came out the next day and immediately told us we did not have to replace many rows of bricks as we were told. He said he could replace the damaged bricks. The price he quoted us was very reasonable. He came back the next day and replaced the bricks and mortar in no time flat. I would highly recommend Jim for any work that you may need done.

My neighborhood has gotten a bum rap for years. I am proud to say that I grew up on St. Clair and attended Collinwood High school. The lessons and skills I learned living in that neighborhood has followed me throughout my life. It has strengthened me throughout my travels in the United States and worldwide. From swimming at the Y.M.C.A. or skating at the Shaw roller rink. Today I live in Slavic Village quite a change from 117th and St. Clair. Slavic Village use to get a bum rap as well however has manifested into something quite enchanting. On May 4th some friends and I are going to add to the enchantment in Slavic Village by putting on a comedy show at the Magalen 5203 Fleet Avenue Cleveland, Ohio. Welcome to a story about a  the real life haunted house on Cleveland’s east side !! On a long quiet street, where half of the houses are torn down, the street looks like a ghost town! There's a home that sits abandoned and haunted on Locke Ave, 12817 Locke Ave. is the address of the house where the residents of the street say this home is haunted. People have recalled hearing all kind of strange sounds banging, slamming, walking, stomping and moaning. I can vouch for those claims, because I witnessed it myself. All these unexplained sounds. I was there and heard them all. There was a tragic event that happened, a man was murdered in his house by a family member. The murder victim name was Paul Cotton, I had a opportunity to experience these strange but memorable activities. I had to clean and bag up Paul’s belongings, while I was doing this I kept hearing a knock at the door.

One of the perks of our job running NEOFOODIES is we get heads up on any new restaurants or when a restaurant comes under new ownership.  When that happens,  we feel it’s our duty to check them out for our readers. This review comes from 2 different perspectives, 1) As owner & Administrator of NEOFOODIES & 2) As an artist who works on Waterloo. The latter is just as important as the former because Waterloo is lined up & down the street with a thriving arts & culture scene all looking for where to eat.

We are just weeks away from the third annual Collinwood v. Euclid “Big Clean” Great American Cleanup on Saturday, April 6th, 2019 from 9am to 1pm at Villa Angela – St. Joseph High School.

The February 12th meeting of the E 185th Neighborhood Association was full of news and information for our community.

We started humbly in a 2-car garage. There was literally no overhead except the folding chairs we bought to sit on and the pizza we ordered. We were able to sell a dining set others were selling for $5,000, for $1,800. With growth and the right people, we have been able to expand that idea with two warehouses over 25,000 sq. feet and offer over 4000 products! We still use the same formula when pricing our products, and we can do that due to the volume in which we sell our products. We can also thank all the customers that understand how we do things, the word of mouth and all the repeat customers. Take a look around, we are always running specials and we do not hound you.  Without a doubt, the last few years - and especially this past summer - have been a whirlwind of rumors, conjecture - and questions - about the Northeast Shores Development Corporation, and its future.

 Prior to the resignations of the former Board of Directors of NSDC, which took effect on October 31, three new Board members were elected for terms, which began on November 1, 2018, and the new Board elected one additional member. We are:
