VASJ Vikings end football season with loss to Warren JFK
VASJ ended a very positive season under first-year head coach Elvis Grbac with a 21-10 loss to visiting Warren JFK at Sparky DiBiasio Stadium in Euclid on Nov. 2.
VASJ (6-4, 2-1) took the opening kickoff and marched 87 yards in 12 plays, culminating in a 12-yard scoring by junior Lavelle Smith.
The Vikings followed by forcing a turnover on downs, but two plays later, JFK’s Cameron Hollobaugh picked off a pass and returned it 41 yards for a TD to tie the game at 7.
Warren JFK (7-3, 3-0) drove 51 yards on 10 plays to score on a 3-yard Hollobaugh run in the second quarter to go up, 14-7.
VASJ freshman Apollo Percic nailed a 30-yard field goal to cut it to 14-10 at the half.
The Vikings were shut out in the second half.
Jesse Likens broke free for a 45-yard scoring run in the third quarter to extend the Eagles’ lead to 21-10.
The Vikings had two opportunities to score after that, but an interception off a tipped pass in the end zone stopped the first one, then a penalty and sack pushed them back on the following effort.
In addition to the NCL White title, the Eagles’ season will continue with a playoff berth in Division VII, Region 25.
Smith finished with 135 yards on 24 carries to lead the Vikings, and junior Kevin Eiseman passed for 100 yards.
