New Flag Dedicated at SJN

Specialist Streb and Mr Lawlor demonstrate how to properly attach and raise the flag

On Thursday, Oct 31, a new flag was dedicated at St. John Nottingham Lutheran School. The new flag, donated by School Commission Chairman Steve Kile, replaced the old one, a flag given to SJN by the United States Army that flew over a forward base during Operation Desert Storm. It was time to retire the old flag after so many years. It will be delivered to Boy Scout Troop 179 (where Principal Peck is an Assistant Scoutmaster) for proper and respectful retirement.

Specialist Streb of the West Virginia National Guard, recently returned from the Middle East and husband of 6th grade teacher Mrs. Streb, was on hand to teach the students about proper flag etiquette and handling. Students learned how to fold the flag as well as how to properly raise and lower it, the significance of flying a flag at half-mast, and many other things they will need to know as flag guardians for St John Nottingham. On hand as well to co-ordinate the event was history teacher Mr. Lawlor and his class.

David Peck

Principal of St. John Nottingham Lutheran School
