What is New at Lake Shore Intergenerational School

WHERE WE’VE BEEN:

The month of September has included many family events here at LIS. We began the month with Curriculum Night, an event lead by our teachers. Parents/families get to experience what a typical day in their child’s classroom looks and feels like.

Our reading mentors officially began mentoring the week of September 11th. The students were thrilled to have another caring adult in the building to share stories with. This year we have a total of 21 mentors, 10 of which are new to LIS!

The end of the month brought two very exciting events, Donuts with Dad and the Zoo field trips! Donuts with Dad was a rounding success as over 120 father/special males walked their child to school and enjoyed a donuts and conversation with their child and others. The zoo had lots of excitement as the children got to see a variety of animals they’d read and talked about.

WHAT’S NEXT:

We are very excited about our events and activities scheduled for October. To start the month our monthly Intergenerational Visits will begin. Each of our classrooms is partnered with a local long-term care facility for the school year [ManorCare, AlterCare, Slovene Home, Governors Village, Mount Saint Joseph, Braeview, and Gateway Family House]. We visit these facilities once a month and participate in activities that are designed to create meaningful interaction with residents, as well as reinforce classroom learning. We are so grateful for all of our community partners who make these valuable experiences possible for our students.

Other upcoming events include our school-wide community meeting on Friday, September 29th (8:05 am), presentations from the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Ortiz’s Author Visit, Muffins with Mom, and a fall field trip to Patterson’s Apple Farm!
