A New Day in Kindergarten

An exciting initiative for Kindergarten readiness was launched in May to allow area preschoolers an opportunity to visit New Day Academy for a few hours.

About 100 preschoolers from Love-N-Care Daycare and Preschool, First Fruits Child Care Center and Adorable Angels Academy visited the Kindergarten classroom for two hours in an effort to help ease the anxiety of attending Kindergarten.

Other goals of the initiative are to expose area preschoolers to a true Kindergarten learning experience in a typical classroom setting and create excitement and enthusiasm about going to Kindergarten.

Ms. Mary Colan, New Day’s Kindergarten teacher, provided a learning experience that included touring the building, storytelling, identifying colors and counting. Colan, who has worked several years as a teacher, tutor and literacy coach, was excited to have an opportunity to welcome the preschoolers to her class. She said she treated them just like her very own students.

“I try to instill in my students a never-give-up attitude so they can have the strength, stamina and resilience that they will need, not only in school and in learning how to read, but also for the rest of their lives,” said Colan.
