Great New School Opening in Collinwood This Summer

Lakeshore Intergenerational School, the tenth school in the Breakthrough Schools network, will open in Collinwood this August.  The school replicates the highly successful Intergenerational School model, one of the highest-performing public schools in Ohio.

“The community support for our unique approach to education has been overwhelming,” said Intergenerational School founder Dr. Cathy Whitehouse.  Dr. Whitehouse cited an on-line petition to bring an Intergenerational School to Collinwood signed by over 100 residents.

Like the founding school, Lakeshore Intergenerational School will have only 17 students per classroom. Rather than traditional grades, the highly individualized approach groups students into clusters spanning three years.  Each student moves along a developmental scale based on their individual mastery of key concepts.  The Intergenerational School also pairs its students with mentors to create community of lifelong learners.

Lakeshore Intergenerational School is a member of Breakthrough Schools, the highest-rated network of free, public charter schools in Ohio and a close partner with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.  “We are excited and honored to open a high-quality school for the families of this vibrant and historic neighborhood,” said Breakthrough Schools CEO Alan Rosskamm.  Rosskamm cited Northeast Shores Development Corporation as instrumental in bringing Lakeshore Intergenerational School to Collinwood.

“For years residents have had to leave our neighborhood to find a good school,” said Northeast Shores Executive Director Brian Friedman.  “Bringing a high-quality school to Collinwood is critical to our neighborhood’s long-term sustainability.”

Lakeshore Intergenerational School will serve 96 kindergarten through second-grade students in its first year.  It will grow to a K-8 school over the next six years.  Breakthrough Schools is working with St. Casimir Parish in Collinwood for the school’s future location
