Nan's Notes

TO DO THIS WEEKEND Saturday, March 13

Arts Collinwood Gallery: Closing party for “A Little R&R” (George Roby’s ceramic sculptures, GR Hamilton’s dioramas), 6 - 9pm. Singer-songwriter John McGrail (“a hell of a guitar player” whose songs express the discontents of our times) will play at 7:30 pm.

Low Life Gallery: Opening Reception for “Junkmail and Advertisements: Paintings by Joshua Rex”, 6-10 pm; Trouble Books perform at 7:30 pm for their Record Release Party. Joshua Rex is appalled by the deluge of advertising flowing from and over “neon chain stores and ravaged cities”; he paints the products they lure us to buy. “Junk is a mood as well as a physical reality.” The show runs till March 28.

New Craft Shop Grand Open: Ever since Waterloo Design closed (quite some years ago), I’ve been agitating for a handicrafts shop – a source of handmade soaps, cushions, wooden objects, pottery (and, in Waterloo Design’s case, felt pierogis. Perfumed felt pierogis.) I’m not sure about the felt pierogis, but Salty Not Sweet, which opened last week next to Arts Collinwood on Waterloo, promises to fill the gap on giftable items in general. And it’s working on a letterpress studio.

Blue Arrow Records: Wooly Bullys perform at 6:30 pm. With pizza!

Music Saves: Picklefight Puppets at 7 pm, celebrate Kevin’s birthday. With cake!

Star Pop: Green Sale 10-50% off. Recycle old toys for cash or store credit. With snacks! 5-10 pm.

Waterloo 7 Gallery: the usual great mix of Jerry Schmidt’s sculpture and assorted art works.

And at the Beachland:

Cleveland Bachelor Show of the Month: Pop Goes the Beachland! With SUMMER CATS, Afternoon Naps, City Center and Lowly the Tree Ghost.

Also (of great interest to St Jerome’s grads, Patrick Biondo in Cabinet, the band that caused Pat to switch from guitar to the banjo. Not your usual bar band – sweet blue-grass harmonies.

LowLife Gallery, 16101 Waterloo. Thursdays: 6pm-10pm, Fridays: 6pm-11pm, Saturdays: 5pm-11pm, Blue Arrow Records 16101 Waterloo Road, Arts Collinwood, 15605 Waterloo Road.

COMING AT ARTS COLLINWOOD

New: Writers’ Group  March 11

The organizational meeting of the Arts Collinwood Writers' Critique Group will be held Sunday, April 11, 2-4 pm, at the Cafe at ArtsCollinwood. The group is open to all writers of any age and will cover fiction, nonfiction and poetry. The group's character will evolve as the group forms, grows and changes. All Collinwood writers are welcome.

Serious high school students may join. We hope that these fledgling writers--and anyone else who comes--will write stories for the Collinwood Observer. Many stories are not written because the Observer is a volunteer-run newspaper. Please bring paper and pencil or pens.

For further information contact Jim Valentino at j.valentino@sbcglobal.net, or Louisa Horvath at 216-481-5102 or jartzhorvath@att.net

In the Cafe

Michael McNamara will be March’s featured artist; his usual rich and somber palette has gained color, his compositions are heavily patterned – good paintings for a long look. Besides weekly Jazz Wednesdays (first set at 8 pm, second at 9:30 pm, no cover), the Café will be presenting monthly Listen Thursdays. Stay tuned.

Arts Collinwood:Guide To Kulchur  March 20

is launching a monthly Dialogue Series, a community conversation. The series kicks off on March 20 at 2 pm, with a moderated discussion on “The Legacy of NOW.” What will this generation be known for? What aspect of life now will become part of the historic record? This could be your chance to influence the course of history.

Lingua + Film   March 20

On Saturday, March 20, trumpeter Dan Bode leads an amazing group of musicians to score the silent film classic, "The Lost World," which has scientists and dinosaurs, and is family-friendly. 7pm, $5 admission.
